The trip is set for 2023, when two paying passengers will fly to the International Space Station on a Russian Soyuz capsule for a short expedition that will include one of them venturing outside the ISS airlock, accompanied by a cosmonaut. The participant will become “the first private citizen in history to experience open space,” said a statement from Space Adventures. The company was the first to broker private space travel in 2001 when Dennis Tito, an American businessman, paid more than $20 million for an eight-day trip to the Russian segment of the ISS. Over the next eight years, it arranged another seven successful trips.
