Jose Mourinho understands he may not get the players into Tottenham he wants in the next transfer window, but insists he already has the nucleus of a squad for the next five years.
Spurs’ latest defeat to Sheffield United only increased speculation that Mourinho will need to sign players to improve the club’s form.
The coronavirus pandemic is thought to have cost Tottenham around £200m and the club has revealed they have taken out a £175m Bank of England loan to deal with the hit.
But Mourinho claims he understands “perfectly” the financial situation at the club and does not want to put chairman Daniel Levy in a difficulty by talking about potential transfers.
“I don’t feel very comfortable to speak about [what I want] publicly,” Mourinho told the Evening Standard. “One thing is what I would like and, of course, Mr Levy knows what I would like. But I know the situation perfectly. And that’s why I say, ‘I would like’ and I don’t say, ‘I want’.
