“If they [the U.S.] want to talk about Greenland, they have to talk to Greenland,” the island’s leader said.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte B. Egede said Tuesday that his government is working to arrange a meeting with Donald Trump in light of the United States president’s threats to take over the Arctic island.

Egede used a press conference in Nuuk to address Trump’s comments about the self-ruling Danish territory. The newly inaugurated U.S. leader has repeatedly called for Washington to acquire Greenland and has refused to rule out using military force to do so.

“It is very understandable that people are worried. But the most important thing now is that people remain calm,” Egede said. “We must be able to meet and talk about this calmly.”

Asked if Greenland had conveyed the message that it is not up for grabs directly to Trump, Egede said his government was trying to set up a meeting with the U.S. leader to do just that.
