While, in my personal opinion, the web development landscape slowed down for a few years (2016 - 2021), it started to gain lots of traction just last year (also see State of JS where the images for this article are taken from). In this article, I want to point out new web development trends that I have seen, which are certainly trends which I expect to continue sparking interest among web developers, and which I am excited about for the next year. Let's get right into them ...

Single-page applications (SPAs) and their respective frameworks (e.g. React.js, Vue.js, Svelte.js) have been through more or less hype cycles and have been around for years now. However, with the rise of meta frameworks on top these solutions, we can see a clear trend with applications shifting from client-side (CSR) to server-side rendering (SSR). SSR is all over the place when working with JavaScript frameworks these days.

The most popular meta framework called Next.js comes on top of React.js. Andrew Clark, core React developer, went so far calling it "the real React 18 release" in 2022, because it comes with all the batteries (e.g. Suspense, streaming SSR) included that the React team provides as fundamental building blocks on a lower level of the library. Both, Vercel (the company behind Next.js) and the React.js core team are working closely together delivering a great developer experience.
