In my neighbor’s garden stand two birches, tall and elegant, making pleasant sounds in the wind. Right next to them is an apple tree on which sometimes a green woodpecker tock-tocks. To its left: a cherry tree that’s still impressively large even though they cut it down a few weeks back. Peeking over the fence of my other neighbor’s garden is a Portuguese laurel. The neighbor on the other side has a Persian silk tree. Three houses down you’ll find two Ginkgos, one old and one young. If you walk into the other direction, to the school, there’s Maple trees to your left and right, some of them Japanese, others old & frail, and a group of them covering the path through the park.

Three years ago, before we decided to plant our garden, I didn’t know that a Ginkgo was a tree and from a walk I would only remember that I saw some trees.

When I started writing this newsletter a year ago I thought I’d do exactly what I said I would do: sit down, once a week, set a timer for an hour, write down what’s in my head. I also said that I’ll write 10 of these. Now you’re reading #51 — so much for plans.
