The Reserve Bank said it wasn't warned in time that a file-sharing system it used had been hacked, or that a patch was available that could have prevented a data breach.

Reserve Bank Governor Adrian Orr last month publicly apologised for the serious data breach which occurred via a third-party file-sharing system supplied by Californian company Accellion.

The software system is believed to have been used by the central bank to receive large files containing confidential information from banks, in its capacity as a regulator of the banking sector.

“Accellion failed to notify the bank for five days that an attack was occurring against its customers around the world, and that a patch was available that would have prevented this breach,” he said.
