I have strong opinions about the technologies I choose to adopt or avoid. This page is an attempt to clarify the fuzzy lines I’ve drawn in my mind while making these decisions. My overarching goal is for these criteria to help me err towards technologies that are reliable, long-lasting, and respectful of the people, communities, and environments they operate within.

Note that some criteria may work better for hardware but not be applicable for software and vice versa. My goal is to walk through them all, picking out what seems relevant as I go and considering how it applies to whatever technology I’m considering.

See the following pages for examples of running technologies through this criteria list to arrive at an adopt-or-avoid decision.

There’s a huge variability of trust here that I’ve yet to digest into anything succinct enough to be worth writing here. It’s relatively uncontroversial to have different levels of trust for a technology being funded by Saudi military versus one developed by the US Digital Service. ↩
