Dry skin can be itchy and uncomfortable. It may not be a large cause for concern, but you still want your skin to be as healthy as it can be. But why is exfoliation important? Even with proper cleansing and moisturizing, your skin may still need to experience more than just a cleaning.

A couple different factors can cause dry skin, such as hot or cold weather, low moisture in the air, and even soaking in hot water. Although the effects of dry skin are temporary, it can be quite bothersome. Your skin can feel tighter, look and feel rough, show lines or cracks, flake or peel, and even crack so deep that you may bleed.

To help your skin combat dry skin, incorporating exfoliation into your routine will work wonders. Exfoliation refers to removing dead skin cells from your skin’s surface. It can be done by using abrasive scrubs on your skin, or by using certain scrubs that contain acids that dissolve and remove the skin.

In either case, exfoliation is important because it removes the dead skin cells that create a barrier, clogging the skin and covering the fresh skin cells beneath. Removing the dead skin cells means that cleansers and moisturizers can be more effective, as they can penetrate more deeply into the skin. Exfoliating also means that your pores won’t be clogged by excess oils, which can lead to blemishes or acne.
