Google is reopening its California offices on a voluntary basis starting July 12, a key step as it prepares to require most workers back in September for at least three days a week.

The tech giant won’t require that workers be vaccinated, but those who provide proof can remove their masks in the office. Unvaccinated employees or those who don’t provide verification will be subject to a mask mandate and weekly coronavirus testing, a spokesperson said. Tech companies have generally declined to have vaccination mandates.

Google is one of the biggest office tenants in the Bay Area, with vast campuses in Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Redwood City. It occupies numerous buildings along San Francisco’s Embarcadero, including in the Ferry Building, One Market Plaza and Rincon Center. Its YouTube division is headquartered in San Bruno.

The company’s Southern California offices, which include Los Angeles, Irvine and San Diego, will reopen in two waves on July 13 and July 27.
