NSW Health says it gave more than 160 HSC students at St Joseph’s College at Hunters Hill a Pfizer jab “in error”, but the move has sparked fury from adults waiting for their COVID-19 shot and from teachers who argue they should be given priority.

The Sydney Local Health District, which administered the vaccinations to year 12 students from the school in June, said they were given mistakenly, after a plan to inoculate only Aboriginal students somehow went awry and resulted in 163 boarders from the high-fee school receiving their jabs.

“Through an error, the wider group of boarders in year 12, a total of 163 students, were also vaccinated [at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital],” a spokeswoman said. “Sydney Local Health District apologises for this error.”

NSW Health did not clarify how the error was made. Sources told the Herald on the condition of anonymity, because they were not authorised to speak, that the school asked about inoculating its Indigenous year 12 students and was invited to send all boarders along for the jab.
