Patrick Mahomes has achieved more firsts over Deshaun Watson: first to be drafted, first to win NFL MVP, first to win a Super Bowl, and now first to reach a contract extension.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs have reached a 10-year contract extension with their 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft that keeps Mahomes in a Chiefs uniform through the 2031 season.
The reverberations of that news extend beyond Kansas City — all the way to North Texas and down I-45 to Houston. The Mahomes extension will have an impact on the Houston Texans, who are similarly negotiating with Watson.
Chiefs and QB Patrick Mahomes have reached agreement on a 10-year — 10-year! — contract extension that ties him to Kansas City through the 2031 season, league sources tell ESPN.
The annual salary is going to be key. Coach and general manager Bill O’Brien has to balance locking up their franchise quarterback while also having enough salary cap space leftover to build around Watson.
