As Donald Knuth approached his 87th birthday, the computer science guru honored what’s become a long-standing tradition. He gave a December “Christmas lecture” that’s also streamed online for his fans.

But besides offering the comfort of a familiar face — a December sighting of our favorite algorithm expert demonstrating his infectious glee for math theory — this year, Knuth also included some precious and personal looks back.
