Spotify is considering releasing its Fleet Shift solution, which is used to automate the update of software repos, into the public — similar to when it open sourced its internal developer platform, Backstage, in 2020.

“There’s something called Fleet Shift that we all use at Spotify that automates away the need of upgrading from Python 2 to Python 3,” said Helen Greul, head of engineering for Backstage, during last week’s virtual DevOps Modernization Summit, held by software delivery platform Harness. “This is something we’re also thinking about potentially externalizing and making available to [the] public.”

Spotify calls it “fleet management,” because it’s a way to manage its fleet of components within its microservices architecture.
