The NHS will put 10,000 people a year on an 800-calorie-a-day “soup and shake” diet in a new national drive to help them permanently reverse type 2 diabetes.

Patients will be given low-calorie meal replacement products such as soups, milkshakes and snack bars for three months, triggering rapid weight loss which leads to diabetes remission in up to half of cases.

New findings, presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Venice, show that patients on the programme were 10kg lighter on average after one year, and also saw significant improvements in blood sugar control — a key marker of diabetes. The study was led by the University of Leeds and involved 838 people who took part in pilots.
