Net migration peaked at nearly one million, according to official figures showing the scale of the challenge facing Sir Keir Starmer’s government.

The Office for National Statistics said net migration to the UK fell by 20 per cent to 728,000 in the year to June — but figures for the previous 12 months were far higher than originally estimated.

The figures, which are much higher than expected, will pile pressure on Starmer to introduce fresh measures to reduce net migration after he pledged at the election to bring overall numbers down.

Separate figures published on Thursday revealed that the number of asylum seekers being housed in hotels funded by the Home Office had increased by 6,000 since Labour entered power.

The Home Office figures reveal that by the end of September there were 35,651 migrants in hotels, up from 29,585 in June, although significantly down from the peak of 56,042 in September 2023.

The total cost of the asylum system rose by 36 per cent in a year, with taxpayers footing a bill of £5.4 billion in 2023-24, up from £4 billion in 2022-23.
