A celebrated wildlife photographer has been found alive in the Australian wilderness two weeks after falling and then being attacked by a venomous snake as she lay injured.

Lovisa “Kiki” Sjoberg, 48, was alone and tracking wild horses in the Snowy Mountains when she vanished almost a fortnight ago. Police were alerted a week ago when a rental car firm from which Sjoberg had hired a vehicle reported it was overdue and had been idle for days in the mountains, 450km (280 miles) south of Sydney.

Scores of mounted police, rough-terrain motorcyclists and four-wheel drive enthusiasts mobilised to scour the treacherous alpine terrain. Helicopters also joined the effort and a dedicated Facebook page for Sjoberg’s search garnered more than 1,000 contributors.

Late on Sunday, 13 days after Sjoberg was last sighted, a mountain ranger spotted a figure lying on a remote trail near the ghost town of Kiandra high up in the mountains, where wild horses gather.
