I know I haven’t written a “Bringing Life to Lifeless Rocks” post in a couple of months, but I want today’s post to be a bit more fun in light of all the negative news in the world. Today, we are going to adopt a more casual tone and ponder one of my favorite topics: fast food. Specifically, I would like to answer the following question: which fast food chain will be the first to open a restaurant outside of Earth’s atmosphere?

It’s almost a certainty that Earth-based companies will attempt to make their way beyond Earth as humanity branches out into the Solar System. You would need several thousand people in order to make a fast food location in space turn a profit, but I actually suspect that we could see a fast food chain operate a restaurant in space at a financial loss simply for the everlasting prestige of being the first fast food to serve extraterrestrial humanity.

If we look at Wikipedia’s list of the world’s largest fast food chains, we see that American companies are undeniably dominant in the industry. In particular, I think the top eight global brands of Subway, McDonald’s, Starbucks, KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Domino’s, and Dunkin’ are all likely to make there way into space in the not-too-terribly distant future. These are all universally recognized brands that people would yearn for in order to feel more at home as they start to work and live in colonies in space.
