Programming books, especially those about, dun-dun-dun “The Interview” tend to make much of how difficult it is to become a professional developer, but the truth is that, though the ability to code well is partly a gift - like the ability to play basketball well or to outguess the stock market at every turn - programming ability is mainly a product of good teaching supported by a deep-down love of computers.

So what is up with the take-home quizzes, the grueling and hostile discussions of stupid little trivia questions that have nothing to do with the job itself, and the whiteboard - lol, the whiteboard…

Well, we all know what’s wrong, we’re all talking about it, but let’s get into that later. And, yes, it’s lemming-like lame. But for now, let’s assume we passed the hazing.

What you have to remember is that most grown-up behavior, when you come down to it, is decidedly second-class. People don’t drive their cars as well as they like to believe, or remember to wash behind their ears or follow through with Dry-and-Diet January, etc., etcetera, and so on.
