The first thing that you must remember, as I've mentioned before, is the fact that most adult behavior is decidedly second-rate.

So becoming a competent programmer, contrary to what the coding interview books want you to believe, is fairly easy, seeing as how the ability to code well is partly a gift - just like the ability to play basketball well or outguess the stock market at every turn - but “getting gud” mostly comes down to habitual practice, quality instruction, and a deep-down love of computers.

But to understand what makes a bad programmer requires that one understands the business of software development, in which context, there is a lot more to being a software engineer than just having the ability to code well.

The business of writing code is almost always specified in an observable, results-oriented manner. The customer only cares about what they can see on a screen and can click with their trackpads. That is to say, the customer only values working software.
