The Pros and Cons of Open Source Large Language Models
Open source large language models (LLMs) are special computer programs that can understand and write like humans do. A good example is GPT-3, which was created by OpenAI. It has the power to change how we use computers in many ways. People have a lot of opinions about how we should use AI because it holds massive power. There’s good and bad to everything in life, and we have a responsibility to understand LLMs more before we start using it on a grand scale.
There’s a lot of misinformation floating around out there. One common myth is that these models will replace human creativity and expertise. That’s one area that AI may never be able to duplicate. The reality is that LLMs function as powerful tools in supporting human creativity rather than replacing it. For example, if a writer was struggling, AI could help kick out some ideas so that the writer can find inspiration.
Privacy and security are also concerns. There’s a lot going on with cybersecurity, and more LLM use means weakened data protection in many people’s eyes. That’s really more so a problem with the way someone could use it and not with the AI model itself. We could use large language models to protect people’s information instead of leaking or exploiting it.
