Microsoft confirms taskbar in Windows 11 no longer supports drag and drop

Windows 11 contains some quite drastic and visual changes compared to the good-old Windows 10. After installing Windows 11 preview builds, which are currently available in the Windows Insider program, you will notice right away a new centered taskbar, brand-new Start menu, and other visual refinements.

As usual, a new operating system brings new features and removes some of the previously available ones. Microsoft has already published a list of removed and deprecated features in Windows 11, but as it turns out, there are some more unannounced and quite weird changes. Users noticed that the taskbar in Windows 11 no longer supports drag and drop.

In Windows 10, you can open a file by dragging it onto an app on the taskbar. Also, the same logic works with pinning app shortcuts. It appears none of that works in Windows 11. Any attempt to drag and drop a file or a shortcut to the taskbar in Windows 11 ends up with a stop icon appearing near the cursor.

While some think that inability to drag and drop an object to the taskbar in Windows 11 is a bug, Microsoft confirmed the change is intentional. On Feedback Hub, a Microsoft representative said Windows 11 currently does not support drag and drop, but the company "appreciates users feedback."
