The boss of Google’s Australia and New Zealand cloud computing business has resigned, and employees say they have been left in limbo or “ghosted” over regular promotions after the tech giant cut back its budgets.

Alister Dias, Google Cloud’s vice president for Australia and New Zealand, will leave the role after less than three years, as the company continues to struggle in its fight with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft for a slice of the local IT and artificial intelligence market.

Employees within Google’s Australian cloud go-to-market division, which includes cloud computing salespeople, sales engineers and professional services, have also accused the US tech giant of quietly cancelling its current round of promotions.

Sources said Google VPs in the cloud go-to-market division had instructed Australian managers that the biannual promotions normally awarded at the end of the first quarter would not take place.

Managers were told not to put that information in writing or talk about it in large groups. If an employee asked about their promotion, bosses should instead have a one-on-one conversation with them, a source said.
