Climate intervention research requires guidance at local, regional, and global levels. AGU, in conjunction with a global panel of experts, has facilitated the development of Ethical Framework Principles for Climate Intervention Research, which provides guidance for ensuring: 1. Responsible research, 2. Climate justice, 3. Inclusive public participation, 4. Transparency, and 5. Informed governance.

Researchers can use the five principles in the Framework to integrate ethical considerations and obligations to society into their decision making and pursuit of such investigations.

As more researchers seek support for exploring climate intervention studies, institutional funders can integrate the five principles in the Framework into proposal criteria.

Funding guidelines based on ethical principles will ensure responsible research practices and transparent data management, among other accountability mechanisms.
