About a year ago, I started working on my new SaaS startup: Birdslate. The idea back then was very fresh: an asynchronous video communication platform for teams. There was no tool like ours on the market, and the ongoing pandemic made remote work an exciting space to be in.

My co-founder and I are both techn ical, and the scope of our product wasn’t too big. We knew that we could finish the product within a couple of months without having to invest too much money in it. Given the situation, we were standing in front of a dilemma: we could start working on the product right away, or we could do thorough customer research to validate our idea first.

Async video communication is not something people were previously using in the business world, so we didn’t feel like there was an easy way to get proper feedback. Hence, we decided to risk it and build an MVP.

It doesn’t mean we had zero feedback, we had a limited amount of it, and it happened to be very, very good. People loved the concept of not having to go into a meeting and instead having the option of sending and watching video messages. Everyone we talked to found the idea exciting and simply cool.
