Move over Hennessey, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus, SSC North America, Drako Motors, and make some room for Hyperion Motors and their new XP-1, the first American made, hydrogen powered 220 mph electric supercar.

“We are extremely excited to launch Hyperion to the world so we can educate people to the benefits of hydrogen-based power systems. As the most abundant element in the universe, the potential is virtually limitless. Our goal is to tell the story of hydrogen with inspiring vehicles and infrastructure solutions.” said Angelo Kafantaris, Hyperion CEO and founding member. “With the debut of the XP-1, we aim to kick-start the final frontier towards a cleaner tomorrow for generations to come.”

The Hyperion XP-1, designed by a team the boasts ex-NASA aerospace engineers, will not only hit speeds of over 220 mph, it will do so for a long time as it also has 1,000+ mile range per tank of hydrogen.

Every other hydrogen fuel cell vehicle makes use of lithium-ion batteries as buffers for power, but the XP-1 ditches batteries completely. The result is a far lighter vehicle which, at a curb weight just under 2,275 pounds, combines all the benefits of the immense instant torque of permanent magnet electric motors, without having to haul around the extra mass of a massive traction battery.
