Salina - rescue operation under water: divers have freed a sperm whale from a fishing net off the coast of Italy. The network was confiscated as "illegal fishing gear".
The ten-meter-long male animal caught the tail fin in the net off the Aeolian island of Salina, said the coast guard on Sunday.
In a difficult operation at a depth of two meters, a team of divers was able to free the sperm whale. The animal could then join three other whales, all of which had been waiting for it some distance away.
Whale conference in Barcelona: The marine mammals, weighing up to 200 tons, could play a major role in saving the climate.
