ISeeCars.com has just released a report that analyzes fatality data from model year 2018-22 cars, and the Corvette ranks as the second most dangerous car on that list with fatal accident rates nearly five times higher than the average vehicle. We worry about that rating even more after the 1,064-horsepower Corvette ZR1 debuts on the road sometime next year.

On the other hand, a close family member of ours just survived a run-in with an 18-wheeler in his 2021 Corvette coupe, and we’re blessed to report that the engineering was strong enough to total the car and still keep his injuries to a minimum, just a slightly cracked hip and a broken sternum.

“New cars are safer than they’ve ever been,” said Karl Brauer, iSeeCars Executive Analyst. “Between advanced chassis design, driver assist technology, and an array of airbags surrounding the driver, today’s car models provide excellent occupant protection. But these safety features are being countered by distracted driving and higher rates of speed, leading to rising accident and death rates in recent years.”

We’re not really surprised to see the Corvette (13.6 deaths per billion vehicle miles or 4.8x the overall average) joined on the list by the Porsche 911 (13.2 deaths or 4.6x) since sports cars inherently encourage risky driving habits by some drivers.
