Fujitsu Ltd. today upgraded its 2.5-in. SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) disk drive line with the addition of the new MHZ2 BT-series offering that offers up to 500GB storage capacity in a three-platter design.

Fujitsu said the new offering will be available in 400GB and 500GB packages and will ship in May. The company's previous 2.5-in. SATA device offered capacities of 160GB, 200GB and 300GB.

The MHZ2 BT storage device spins at speeds of up to 4,200 rpm, offers improved power efficiency and runs quieter than the company's older 2.5-in. SATA drives, said Hagberg. He said the new disk does not require a built-in fan.

"Talking with some of the [PC] notebook designers and set-top box manufacturers, the No. 1 [hard drive] complaint they have is acoustics. The hum of the drives and fans is distracting," remarked Hagberg. "[The MHZ2 disk drive] is running cool enough that it doesn't need a fan."

Fujitsu has allowed some set-top box providers to perform early tests on its new drive for possible inclusion into future product rollouts, he added.
