Japan's Fujitsu Ltd has said it will halve its office space over the next three years as it rewrites the way employees work within the "new normal" amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The IT solutions company said about 80,000 employees in the group in Japan will work with flexible working hours, and working from home will be standard when possible.

"We will revise our current framework for work, allowances and pay, which is now based on the assumption that employees travel to certain offices every day," Hiroki Hiramatsu, head of human resources, told a briefing today.

In recent years, Fujitsu has sold or closed its losing hardware businesses such as laptops and smartphones to focus on software services, a business relatively easy to operate remotely.
