Editor's Note: This is a transcript of a really great talk given in 2003. You can watch the full video of it here. I thought it was a shame that the video had under 100 views and also has pretty poor sound quality, so I decided to create a transcript using a custom script which I then manually edited for accuracy (as well as added section headers to for convenience). You can also see the original slides from the talk here. Note that I disclaim all rights to any of this content. I just want to bring it to the attention of more people in a convenient form, and I'm confident that the late Len Sassaman would be OK with that (RIP Len). If you see any errors in the transcript, please submit a PR to fix them. — Jeff Emanuel

We're focusing for both the talks on high latency systems like Mixmaster, things for email, remailers. There are some low latency systems for web browsing or something, but we're going to not focus on those quite as much. Okay, so for this one, before lunch, we've got some stuff about adversaries and threat models. We're going to give you a walkthrough of the Mixminion design process. I'll tell you what that is in a bit.

We've got some alternate designs besides Mixminions so you can get a feel for the flavor of possibilities. And then we've got some controversial issues and some economics to look at. So here's the motivation slide. I think at a conference like this most people have a pretty good sense of the motivation. The obvious one is individuals.
