Confucius (551-479 BCE) was an early Chinese philosopher who lived in the late period of the Zhou dynasty - a tumultuous time during which separate warring states had formed throughout China. Confucius imagined a world where rulers led by moral example and with the best interests of their people at heart. He amassed a group of devoted disciples who helped to immortalise his thought in the Analects, with his main teachings centering around the questions of what makes for a good man, and what makes for good government?

'Philosopher of the Month' is a monthly series exploring the life, works, and key philosophies of some of the world's most influential thinkers.
