How The Hell Are We OK With China?
Today is the anniversary of The Tiananmen Square Massacre, aka The June Fourth Incident. Some people in China bravely stood up to their tyrannical government and demanded freedom, and 31 years ago today, the government forces massacred those people. Back then, the USA was still wrestling with the USSR and we weren’t that focused on China.
Today, China is committing genocide. They are systematically, industrially killing people in a way not seen since Nazi Germany. We don’t have images of what’s happening in Xinjiang, so we aren’t as viscerally shocked as we should be. But we do know that China is using Uyghurs as slaves, systematically massacring them, and harvesting their organs. They are committing crimes against humanity, breaking all kinds of international law.
We know this. We aren’t trying to hide it or deny it. It isn’t politically contested - both Trump and Biden administrations have declared that China is committing genocide. It’s been in the New York Times and Fox News. You can claim that all reality is political, but China committing genocide is as close to fact as anything is today.
