It’s a given that interviews are a means to validate candidates for a role. Therefore, technical interviews are presumably intended to validate for technical roles.

The problem as I see it is technical interviews often create a false signal. While they can potentially provide perspective on technical proficiency, I think they more often create false negatives.

I believe this will matter to you because you are likely filtering out candidates which may fit your needs better. Candidates which match the actual role and day to day of the job. Not only that but you are likely wasting more resources (time and people) doing it.

I’m not the only one that thinks this, apparently NC State University in conjunction with Microsoft also had a similar perspective a few years ago: Tech sector job interviews assess anxiety, not software skills.

In this post, I will attempt to break down my perspective on technical interviews (techs). What I see to be their real value and application. By the end of this, I hope you will know why as a Hiring Manager I’ve pushed back on using them and what I prefer to do instead.
