Wireguard's user friendliness problem makes it lose to openvpn in 2021. Seriously.

Because of these two reasons, I cannot use WireGuard. I have tried several times and it does not work each time, and I never leave with a good understanding of WHY it didn’t work.

WireGuard has to improve its friendliness in order to replace outdated VPN technology. Because it is not user friendly, I am continuing to use OpenVPN.

User friendly, to me, means that I can provision a brand new machine, follow instructions on a website, and when I’m finished following those instructions I have a working solution. This has never happened with WireGuard.

For each of these cases, I provisioned a fresh Debian 10 machine on Vultr to act as the “server”. The “endpoint” is a Macbook Pro or an iPhone.

Following the WireGuard Quick Start guide. This failed because the guide is not written for my use case - it’s just to connect two nodes. Following the step by step instructions does not result in a working setup.

Using Angristan’s wireguard-install project. His OpenVPN installer is fantastic and works 100% every time I use it to provision a new server or a new endpoint. However, when I run this step-by-step, I don’t end with a working setup.
