Modos Tech has announced the Modos Paper Monitor, a 13.3‑inch open‑hardware e‑ink display designed for real‑time use. Unlike traditional e‑paper, it supports refresh rates of 60 to 75 Hz with sub‑100 ms latency, enabling smooth interaction and multiple image modes.

The Modos Paper Monitor is powered by the Caster e‑paper controller, which is built on a Xilinx Spartan‑6 LX16 FPGA with DDR3‑800 framebuffer memory. The hardware supports electrophoretic panels from manufacturers such as E Ink and SiPix. With a processing rate of up to 200 MP/s, it enables multiple grayscale modes including binary, 4‑level, and 16‑level, with optional dithering algorithms such as blue‑noise and error‑diffusion.

The display itself has a resolution of 1600 × 1200 and supports flexible screen update control. It connects via HDMI or USB‑C and works on Linux, macOS, and Windows. The monitor comes in an enclosure for plug‑and‑play use, providing a calmer, eye‑friendly alternative for coding, writing, editing, and general desktop tasks.

Alongside the standalone monitor, Modos is offering the Paper Dev Kit. This version uses the same controller technology but is sold without an enclosure, allowing easier integration into custom projects. Available with 6‑inch or 13.3‑inch monochrome and color panels, it supports applications such as ambient dashboards, minimalist writing systems, and low‑power digital displays.
