A new species of ancient human discovered in China may replace Neanderthals as our closest relative and potentially reshape the understanding of human evolution, according to a new study.

Dubbed Homo longi or “Dragon Man”, the species was identified from a 146,000-year-old skull fossil of a 50-year-old man, known as the Harbin cranium, which was found in Harbin City in Heilongjiang province.

It is the second time this week that researchers have announced a find that could rewrite the story of human evolution. On Thursday 24 June it was revealed that remains of an early human thought to have evolved into Neanderthals had been found in Israel.

Researchers said the skull is big enough to hold a brain that is similar in size to that of a modern human – around 1,420ml in brain volume.

But they added that the Dragon Man would have had comparatively larger eye sockets, thick brow ridges, a wide mouth, and oversized teeth.
