If you want to add a gearshift to your virtual race car, Oli Norwell has just the project for you.

Your USB device extends a joystick with a threaded rod length across a custom cut wooden board, restricting movement to a 1-5 / reverse / neutral layout. The gearshift is maintained in different gear positions using magnets, to prevent it from automatically returning to the center.

An Arduino Leonardo reads the switch states and passes through the switch positions like a simulated joystick in HID mode. Possible future improvements include extra buttons, mode selection options and even an LCD screen for feedback.
