Apple’s product innovation roadmap is always a hot topic of speculation. The launch of the Vision Pro surprised many, just as Apple TV+ and Fitness+ did before. And while the advent of Apple Intelligence was anticipated, its exact nature remained unclear until WWDC. So, what’s next for Apple? With artificial intelligence now a key focus, I believe Apple’s next major innovation will be a language learning app, poised to become a cash cow. Here’s why.

Note: I do not have insider information from Apple; the following piece is solely based on my extensive knowledge of the digital language learning market and my enthusiasm as an Apple fan.

Apple Intelligence has so far been introduced as a collection of (more or less) interconnected AI features across Apple’s services and platforms. This includes on-device AI, cloud operations, and third-party interfaces like OpenAI. Moving forward, two scenarios are possible:

Apple’s strategy often involves observing market trends before launching superior products, as seen with the iPhone, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. Condensing the current shift in the digital language learning industry, this is likely the case as well. In recent years, startups have been experimenting with utilizing AI to power the next generation of language learning apps that move away from traditional, exercise-based methods like Duolingo and Rosetta Stone towards more natural, interactive experiences that combine speaking freely and receiving instant feedback on word choice, grammar, or pronunciation. The most prominent example of such an application comes from San Francisco-based startup “Speak”. Their lead investor? No other than OpenAI themselves. This significant commitment from OpenAI alone suggests that Apple is also eyeing the potential of an AI-powered language learning app. As I am writing this article, Apple is likely analyzing existing solutions, market gaps, and customer needs. Apple can take these insights and create a superior language learning app that not only meets but exceeds user expectations, setting a new standard in the education segment. Speaking of education…
