What is Derad Network?
To understand what Derad Network is and what it aims to accomplish, we first need to understand what ADS-B is. ADS-B, or Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast, is a technology used in aviation that allows aircraft to determine their precise location using satellite navigation. It periodically broadcasts this information, including position, speed, and planned movements, to air traffic control and other aircraft equipped with ADS-B receivers. This real-time data enhances situational awareness, improves flight safety, and helps air traffic controllers manage airspace more efficiently. ADS-B is a key component of modern air traffic management systems, especially as it provides coverage in areas where radar might be limited or unavailable.
The main problem with ADS-B ground stations is the lack of coverage in rural areas. ADS-B is an important component of overall flight safety. Every year, airlines spend billions of dollars on flight safety. However, currently, there is no incentive mechanism for ordinary people to run ADS-B ground stations. An important share of the ADS-B coverage is provided by for-profit companies.
This results in some common drawbacks, such as slow scalability, high maintenance costs, and high recurring costs, such as rent for station areas and UPS. Overall, there are many more drawbacks, but traditional ways of deploying ADS-B ground stations aren’t cost- and time-efficient.
