Alstom is developing innovative technology – tram airbags – that will become part of Zurich’s transportation system, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

These airbags are being developed for the Flexity trams, which have been supplied to the city for over 2.5 years at the request of the public transport operator VBZ.

ShockTest Master is a testing platform for secondary suspension springs and vibration dampers/shock absorbers for railway transport

According to project manager Marcel Kuntz, the airbag will activate shortly before a collision, reducing the consequences of accidents.

It is necessary to increase the speed of airbag deployment and develop a mechanism for quick folding so that the tram can resume operation immediately after an incident.

Alstom expects to patent this technology, which will undoubtedly be in demand not only in Zurich but also in other cities facing safety issues in public transport.
