Munroe (Roedy) passed away peacefully in the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria on October 5, 2023, after declining health on many fronts. He was the eldest son of George Frederic Green and Barbara Jessie (Miller) Green. He leaves behind his beloved companion, Geneva Hagen and four siblings, Charlotte (Jerry) Coombs, Daphne Green (Chuck), Cynthia Green and Roger (Lynn) Green and a loving extended family. His extraordinary life was devoted to making the world a better place in many ways. Roedy was a very prominent computer programmer. This started at age 15, when he designed a timetabling program for the West Vancouver School Board. He received a lifetime achievement award from Byte (BIX) magazine for developing his own computer language, Abundance, and a Java glossary, both of which people were free to use as they saw fit. He founded a company called Canadian Mind Products with projects that included assisting Dr. John Lilly in a dolphin communication study and Dr. Finn at UBC on equations to track the flow of pollutants in rivers and soils. He was the most prominent gay activist in Western Canada and wrote a booklet to help gay people navigate their way through obstacles. He gave generously to charity. In 1986 he sold his house and donated the proceeds to the Hunger Project. He had two pre-fab houses built in Afghanistan and also bought survival kits for newborns, village water pumps, livestock, and vaccines for those in need, as well as supporting many foster children around the world. He was a lifelong adherent of Ken Keyes' Living Love and worked tirelessly to speak out against social injustice. He will always be lovingly remembered for his playfulness, generosity and genius. In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation to Plan Canada, David Suzuki Foundation, Dying with Dignity Canada or another cause you associate with Roedy would be appreciated. A Celebration of Life will be held at Charlotte's home in Steveston on Wednesday, November 15 at 2:00 p.m. Please email daphnercg@gmail.com to RSVP and for the address.
