Just as the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) defined levels of autonomy for self-driving cars, we can imagine similar levels for AI in software development. Let’s explore this analogy and see how the path to AI-driven coding parallels the evolution of autonomous vehicles, along with the impact on software development jobs at each stage and the probability of each becoming a reality.

Autonomous Driving: At Level 0, there is no automation. The driver is fully in control of the vehicle, handling all driving tasks without any assistance.

AI in Development: In the early days of coding, everything was manual. Developers wrote every line of code themselves without AI support. While coding tools existed, they didn’t have the intelligence to assist with the development process actively.
