ANN ARBOR, MI - Perhaps the most popular Nine Inch Nails song is 1994′s “Hurt.” The band’s former drummer Chris Vrenna is feeling the opposite as a future University of Michigan faculty member.

Vrenna, one of the founding members of the band, will join the university’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance as an assistant professor next fall, according to a university announcement.

“My father is a Michigan alumnus,” the Grammy-winning musician said in a statement. “He and I would spend Saturday afternoons watching Michigan football, so I grew up a Wolverines fan. This opportunity to become a professor at Michigan and move to Ann Arbor feels like a homecoming for me.”

Vrenna will join the music school’s Department of Performing Arts Technology. He has experience as a drummer, producer, engineer, remixer, composer and music technology educator, officials said.
