Exactly twelve years ago today, on 12/12/2012, the first Threema version was published in Apple’s App Store, laying the foundation for secure and privacy-friendly mobile communication.

In the fast-paced age of the Internet, twelve years seem like an eternity. Today, it’s hard to imagine life without the smartphone as a constant companion, but back in 2012, the world was a different place. BlackBerry still offered devices with a built-in hardware keyboard, emojis weren’t popular outside of Japan (on Android, there wasn’t even a native way to insert them), and the sales of smartphones didn’t exceed those of regular mobile phones yet.

However, the shift to smartphones and the countless technological advances also gave rise to many new surveillance mechanisms. That’s why Threema’s focus on security and uncompromising privacy protection has become an even more important factor since its inception.

But not only the technological environment has evolved, so have the needs of Internet users and with them the Threema app: various new features have been added, the interface was refined, and the product offering has been expanded with the business solutions Threema Work, Threema Broadcast, and Threema OnPrem.
