Today, on Girls in ICT Day, we take a moment to reflect on the importance of encouraging more girls and young women to pursue education and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Despite the significant strides made in gender equality, there is still a noticeable gender gap in STEM fields. This gap starts in the classroom and continues into the workforce. On average, around 30% of the world's researchers are women. Less than a third of female students choose to study higher education courses in subjects like math and engineering. Women in STEM fields publish less and often receive less pay. Between 2011 and 2021, the number of women in the STEM workforce increased by 31%. However, in 2020, women had lower median earnings than men in STEM occupations overall. Race and ethnicity are significant factors in rates of participation in the science and engineering workforce.

STEM education for girls is not just about preparing them for the jobs of the future. It’s about empowering them, closing the gender gap, and making a positive impact on society.
