Over the past twenty-plus years, I've used notebooks, to-do apps, and full-blown task management software to try and manage the work that is part of running a small business.

The problem with notebooks or apps is that tasks can be separated over multiple pages or buried in sub-folders. Things can get messy fast. Worst of all, the essential tasks that will make a difference to your business get buried or overlooked. As a result, you often end up just doing the smaller, more mundane tasks at the top of the list.

I've accidentally created my own task management system. I was tired of all the digital options and managing it all, so I went back to pen and paper, and over the next 6 months, it was slowly refined. It wasn't intentional. I just tweaked it as I went, so it worked better for me.

And I have to say, nothing I've used has worked better than what I'm doing now. I've been using it for the past two years, and it's had an enormous impact on my working life.
