He was a professor of mathematics specializing in linear algebra and operator theory, who spent most of his career at the University of Toronto. While he was at UMich in the 1950s, he refused to cooperate with HUAC hearings and was consequently fired from the university, charged with contempt of congress, and sent to prison for six months. During his stay in prison, he published a paper titled "An extremal problem for plane convex curves" with the following footnote on the first page:
